Meet the North East Leeds Number Train Driver

Hi, I’m Becky, and I run Number Train classes across North East Leeds, welcoming families from Headingley, Meanwood, Chapel Allerton, Moortown, Roundhay, and Alwoodley.
With 12 years of experience teaching Early Years and Key Stage One here in Leeds, I’ve always loved helping young children learn and grow. After having my own three kids (who are now 10, 9, and 7!), I decided I wanted a career that allowed me to be around for them a little more.
I actually started my Number Train journey as a parent, attending classes with Annette. I quickly realized we needed something this engaging and fun in North East Leeds. I knew right away I wanted to spark that love of numbers for families in my community!
“Becky makes sure all the kids get involved to whatever extent they feel comfortable and she helps build their confidence, she’s great with the children – it’s a real personalised approach.“
Why local families choose Number Train
Number Train North East Leeds was created for local families who want to give their little ones a confident, positive start with maths — long before they walk through the doors of primary school.
From Oakwood and Roundhay to Chapel Allerton, Meanwood, Moortown, Alwoodley, Shadwell and Headingley, our friendly parent-and-child classes bring early maths to life through music, movement, stories, games, sensory play and hands-on activities.

We know that young children don’t learn maths by sitting down and filling in worksheets. They learn while they’re playing, singing, sorting, counting, matching, building and exploring. That’s why every Number Train session is designed to make maths feel fun, natural and achievable.
For families across North East Leeds, Number Train is a chance to discover just how much maths your child is already learning through everyday play — and how you can build on it together at home. Whether you’re counting steps around Roundhay Park, spotting shapes as you walk through Chapel Allerton, counting buses and spotting house numbers in Headingley, sorting toys at home in Meanwood, or comparing who has more at snack time in Oakwood, there are opportunities for mathematical learning everywhere.
Led by experienced Early Years teachers, our classes help children develop the foundations they will take with them into school, while also building confidence, independence, communication, listening, turn-taking and perseverance.
And because we’re a local business, we’re not just a class you attend and leave. Number Train is about bringing local families together — creating a welcoming community where children can learn, play and make friends, while parents can share ideas, meet other families and discover simple ways to support their child’s learning at home.
From their first counting games to their first day at school, we’re helping children across North East Leeds build a love of maths from the very beginning.
Number Train North East Leeds works with families and nurseries across the local area, including Oakwood, Roundhay, Chapel Allerton, Meanwood, Moortown, Alwoodley, Shadwell and Headingley.
There are lots of wonderful activities for little ones across North Leeds — but Number Train is different because maths is at the heart of everything we do.

What local families say about Number Train
“We’ve been going to number train for 7 months now with my 3.5 year old. I’ve done a lot of classes with her but this by far gives us the most for our money. It’s a jam packed hour with so much fantastic content within it.
Becky has a great way of making numbers fun and it gives us inspiration of things we can do to continue the learning at home as well. Our daughter has come on loads since starting, she can confidently count to 20, counts backwards from 15, recognises numbers 1-10 with ease as well as different shapes and sizes. It’s all come from Becky’s fab teaching and she gets excited for Tuesdays every week because of the class! It’s a great way of preparing them for school and I love that the class is structured in a way which engages them. There’s always a craft, movement to get them energised, a theme of the week with focused learning around that and short free play/games section which is always a hit too. It’s not a laid back class as the kids need to be listening but Becky really does have a way of getting all the kids interested. Even my 18 month amazes me and gets involved every week, initially I thought bringing her would be too difficult but she loves it and gets a lot out of it too! She joins in with the activities – Pointing and taking objects away, warming up with all the actions and parachute time is her favourite. The confidence it’s given the girls is worth every penny and we thoroughly enjoy coming every week so thank you Becky. “
“The creativity, enthusiasm and thoughtfulness of the teacher Becky turns education about numbers into an adventure each week that captures the attention of each and every child. Thank you to Number Train’s creator Annette for developing a class that sparks a passion for learning in young minds. If there’s any train to get aboard, it’s the Number Train.”
“We’ve started Number Train with Becky on a Friday and it’s a brilliant class. It’s not just counting! My son is always really engaged – there is a different theme each week, there’s some physical movement round the room, a bit of messy artwork, singing, games and fancy dress. The class incorporates lots of useful skills like turn-taking, resilience, sharing, listening to others – I’m really glad to see my son develop these skills ready for going to pre-school.”
“I started Number train with my 2 and 3 and a half year old in September 2022 when looking for a class/activity I could take them both to. It’s safe to say they both love it. There’s singing, dancing, crafting along with learning. They look forward to finding out where Norman and Nancy will go every week and get so much out of it. I have seen their number skills and confidence improve over the year. Becky is so enthusiastic and patient with everyone. Their grandparents have loved taking them too.”

How old does my child need to be to join Number Train?
Number Train was originally designed for children aged 3 years+ however over the last few years, several children have started when they were 2 and a half years old, and attended until starting school. As all children develop differently, it is up to each individual parent to decide if their child is ready, so by coming along to a trial session, parents can decide for themselves.
Can siblings attend?
Yes, you are welcome to bring a younger sibling along, and if they are under 2 years old, they may attend free of charge. Siblings over 2 years old are charged at 50% of the normal fees.
Due to limited capacity rules, please let me know in advance if you intend to bring a younger sibling so I can account for them in my total numbers. Please note, it is the parent’s responsibility to watch younger siblings, as there may be toys/ small items which the older child use and must be kept out of reach.
What happens at a typical Number Train session?
Our sessions use a combination of familiar structural elements and new material to help children build confidence. Every session starts with our welcome routine, and then children use clues to guess that week’s destination. Every week will be a different theme, ranging from the land of the dinosaurs to a busy bakery, with bespoke activities designed around each theme.
We understand that different children learn, and play, differently, so every session will combine physical activities with more focused tasks. By using dynamic ‘brain break’ activities, children get to use their bodies and burn off some energy, helping them to engage in tasks that require more attention.
Some activities will involve the whole class, some might have the children working in small group or teams, or some will be working on their own with their adult. Approaching tasks in a range of different ways helps prepare the children for school, and builds important skills like following instructions independently, taking turns, or speaking in front of a group.
Every class also includes an art activity, where children will be guided through creating a themed piece in class that they can take home with them at the end. Children love being able to share what they’ve done with their friends and family, and you won’t have to worry about tidying up the mess after!
The Number Train programme has been developed in line with the current EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage) curriculum, giving the children (and parents!) the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the concepts and terminology that will be used at school. So if you haven’t heard of number bonds, or can’t remember what subitising means, jump on the train and we’ll bring you up to date with the skills you need to support your child’s learning!
Do you offer trial sessions?
Yes – we encourage parents to book a trial session to see if the class is right for your child. Trial sessions can be easily booked online, and there is no obligation to sign up afterwards.
To book your trial, please click here or contact us to find out more.
Do parents stay during the session?
Yes, Number Train is designed so adults can participate together with their child, offering support and encouragement. Parents often mention how much they learn alongside their children and leave with lots of ideas to try at home!
Can my child join mid-term?
Yes, you can join Number Train at any time, however, the ideal time to start is September when we start the programme. As the year goes on, we build on concepts we learn in the earlier sessions (for example, moving from counting to 10 to counting to 20) but we are able to cater to children of all ages and abilities so it’s never too late to join!
Getting in touch a few months in advance is always worthwhile as certain classes fill very quickly in the Autumn term. To view availability for your area, click here.
